Building a strong Ultimate Team without spending FC Points is absolutely possible. Here's a practical strategy from early-season setup through mid-season upgrades.
The Free-to-Play Philosophy
The biggest mistake free-to-play players make is trying to build a meta squad immediately. Top-rated players cost millions of coins — chasing them early is a trap that leaves you with a weak, incomplete squad.
The correct approach: build a strong domestic league squad first. Cheap, high-chemistry squads consistently outperform expensive mixed squads because chemistry bonuses are significant in FC 25.
Week 1-2: Your Starting Squad
Your starting resources come from:
- Tutorial and early objective rewards
- First week of Squad Battles rewards
- Opening any starter packs from pre-season
Target: A full squad in one domestic league with good chemistry. The Premier League, La Liga, and Bundesliga all have deep, affordable player pools.
Example Premier League budget squad (50,000–80,000 coins):
- Focus on 82–84 rated players in your chosen league
- Prioritize positions that are hardest to fill cheaply (ST, CB)
- Don't spend more than 10,000 coins on any single player early
Best Formations for Free-to-Play
Formations that succeed with budget players tend to share two traits: minimal need for wide attacking players (expensive) and strong defensive shape.
4-3-3 (Holding) — Popular for a reason. Two CDMs provide defensive cover, three forwards create attacking variety. Works well with budget wide forwards.
4-2-3-1 (Narrow) — Strong press, good buildup. The CAM position can be filled cheaply in most leagues. Solid for players who prefer possession.
4-4-2 (Flat) — Old school but effective. Two strikers means chemistry links are easier to manage with domestic squads.
Chemistry: The Free-to-Play Multiplier
Chemistry gives stat bonuses to every player based on their links to teammates. A well-linked 83-rated player with full chemistry consistently outperforms an 87-rated player at 5 chemistry.
Rules for maintaining chemistry:
- Same league = green link (strong chemistry)
- Same nationality = green link regardless of league
- Same club = gold link (maximum chemistry)
Building around a single domestic league makes chemistry simple — everyone in the same league automatically green-links with their neighbours.
Coin-Efficient Upgrade Path
Month 1 (50K–100K coins): Full domestic league squad, all positions filled, full chemistry. Don't upgrade yet — earn more coins first.
Month 2 (200K–400K coins): Identify your 2–3 weakest positions and upgrade those specifically. Use the Transfer Market to find players rated 85–87 in your domestic league at competitive prices.
Month 3+ (500K–1M coins): Start incorporating special cards (Team of the Week, Objectives players) into specific positions. These give big stat boosts while maintaining chemistry if you choose correctly.
Free Players From Objectives
EA FC 25's Objectives system gives free players for completing in-game challenges. These are often:
- 85–87 rated players worth 50,000–200,000 coins on the Transfer Market
- Players you can earn across 2–4 weeks of normal gameplay
- Sometimes meta-relevant players that significantly upgrade your squad
Always check the Objectives tab when you start each session. These free players can replace expensive Transfer Market purchases if you're patient.
SBC (Squad Building Challenges) Strategy
SBCs give packs, coins, and players in exchange for submitted squads. For free-to-play players:
Repeatable SBCs — Some SBCs reset daily or weekly and give profit when completed with cheap fodder. Identify these early and run them whenever your fodder accumulates.
Foundation SBCs — Long-running basic challenges that accept low-rated squads. Good for clearing cheap cards from your club while earning packs.
Avoid: High-rated SBCs that require expensive specific players. Unless the reward is exceptional, the cost rarely justifies it for free-to-play players.
When to Spend Free Coins on Packs
The answer for most free-to-play players: almost never. Buying packs with coins is gambling — the expected return is almost always lower than the coin cost.
Exception: During Team of the Year (TOTY) and Team of the Season (TOTS) promotions, pack expected value spikes significantly. If you've been saving coins, these are the windows where buying packs makes sense.
For all other times, spend coins on specific Transfer Market purchases rather than packs.
