What Is the Spiral Abyss?
The Spiral Abyss is Genshin Impact's end-game combat challenge. It consists of 12 floors of increasingly difficult enemy rooms. You bring two teams of four characters (8 characters total) and must clear each chamber within a time limit.
Floors 1–8 are permanent and give one-time Primogem rewards. Floors 9–12 reset every two weeks and give repeatable Primogem rewards — these are what matter for ongoing income.

New accounts (under 6 months): Focus on floors 9–10 first. Don't force floor 12 before your characters are ready — it wastes time and energy.
Key insight: The Abyss rewards investment in a few well-built characters far more than spreading resources across many mediocre ones. Pick 2 teams of 4, focus all your artifacts and talents on those 8 characters.
Team Building Fundamentals
The Abyss requires two full teams, which means 8 characters. The most common free-to-play approach:
Team 1 — Main DPS team: Your strongest character + supports Team 2 — Second DPS team: A different element/style to handle whatever Team 1 struggles with

If you're struggling to 3-star: Focus on artifact quality over character level. Properly-statted artifacts at decent levels often matter more than character level 90.
Abyss Reset Schedule
The Spiral Abyss resets on the 1st and 16th of each month. After reset:
- Enemy lineup changes
- Your star count resets to 0 for floors 9–12
- Floor 1–8 progress is permanent (one-time rewards already claimed)
Set a calendar reminder for the 1st and 16th. Missing a reset is missing 600 Primogems — almost 4 wishes gone forever.
Tips for Maximizing Stars
Check the current Abyss buffs — Each cycle includes elemental buffs that boost certain team compositions. Build around the current buff when possible.
Time both halves carefully — You need both halves of each chamber to complete within the time limit for 3 stars. If one half is consistently failing the timer, address that team's damage output first.
Use food and potions — These are often forgotten but provide meaningful stat boosts. Stock up on ATK and CRIT food before Abyss attempts.
Don't waste time on Floor 12 if not ready — Floors 9–10 give 300 Primogems per reset. Clearing those consistently is far better than spending hours failing floor 12.
